Diagnosis

Investigations

  • FBC
    • MCV normal if dilutional anaemia
    • megaloblastic (folate deficiency) may be masked in severe anaemia
  • Serum Ferritin

Treatment

  • Hb >6.5 g/dl
    • oral iron 200mg / day
  • Hb <6.5g/dl, unable to take orally, or time to delivery short
    • parenteral iron
    • folate 5mg/day
