Cardiotocography


  • measurement of foetal heart rate and uterine activity using ultrasound probes
  • at term normal foetal heart rate is 110-150bpm and varies >5bpm

Accelerations

  • foetal movement
  • uterine activity

Decelerations

  • should be none prior to labour
  • early decelerations (at onset on contraction) have no prognostic significance
  • late decelerations (starting late during contraction and continuing after contraction finished) indicate impairment of uteroplacental blood flow and foetal hypoxia. Especially if <100bpm
