Anatomical Relations of the Ovary


  • Attached to posterior surface of broad ligament
  • lie with distal ends of fallopian tubes in recto-uterine pouch (of Douglas)
  • can often be palpated through posterior wall of vagina
  • suspensory ligament (fold of peritoneum) descends from posterior abdominal wall across pelvic brim to ovary
  • suspensory ligament carries ovarian artery and vein (forming pampiniform plexus)
  • ligament of ovary runs medially toward uterotubal junction (posterior)
  • round ligament of uterus  continues ligament of ovary in front of uterotubal junction, passes forward through pelvis, across pelvic brim to deep inguinal ring, through inguinal canal to labium majus
