  • C-shaped tube lying around head of pancreas
  • first part of small intestine
  • first part
    • appears as cap on radiographs
    • passes upwards, backwards and to right, lying on sloping side of psoas major
  • 2nd part
    • goes downward from duodenal flexure
    • in front of medial part of right kidney to level of 3rd lumbar vertebra
    • entry of common bile duct at midpoint; acessory pancreatic duct about 2cm above this
  • 3rd part
    • goes to left
    • crosses psoas, sympathetic trunk, IVC and aorta
  • 4th part
    • passes upward to level of 2nd lumbar vertebra, duodenojejunal flexure (left of midline, 1cm below transpyloric plane)
  • supplied by
    • superior pancreaticoduodenal artery from gastroduodenal artery fropm coeliac artery
    • inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery from sperior mesenteric arterty
  • lymphatics drain to nodes at coeliac artery and porta hepatis

Entry of biliary and pancreatic ducts: duodenal papilla, sphincter of Oddi.
Duodenojejunal flexure. Paraduodenal fossa and possible herniae
Duodenal ulcers. Relation of duodenum to gall bladder and pancreas. Paraduodenal fold and inferior mesenteric vein
