  • involves gastric ulcers ands duodenal ulcers
  • mainly due to Helicobacter pylori

Sites

  • most often stomach or proximal duodenum
  • also
    • oesophageal (due to reflux)
    • jejunum (in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome)
    • after gastroenterostomy
    • Meckel's Diverticulum

Symptoms

  • pain
  • worse between meals
  • improved by eating / made worse by eating
  • melaena
  • collapse

Signs

  • ? epigastric tenderness

Treatment

Complications

  • haemorrhage
  • perforation
  • pyloric stenosis / obstruction
