Pyloric Stenosis


  • hypertrophy and hyperplasia of pyloric muscle

Epidemiology

  • typically first born male chils

Clinical Features

  • projectile vomiting at 3-8 weeks old
  • characteristically hungry
  • failure to gain weight
  • visible stomach wall peristalsis
  • palpable "tumour" in right hypochondrium on test feed

Investigation

  • abdominal ultrasonography
  • barium contrast studies
  • U&Es
    • ↓ sodium
    • ↓ potassium
    • ↓ chloride
    • metabolic acidosis

Treatment

  • surgery - pyloroplasty
