Reye Syndrome


  • Acute encephalopathy
  • microvesicular fatty change in liver
  • precipitated by
    • influenza
    • varicella
    • respiratory infections
    • gastrointestinal infections
  • when child has taken Aspirin

Clinical Features

  • vomiting
  • depressed consciousness
  • hepatomegaly
  • hyperammonaemia (>100mmol/l
  • raised transaminases (>100IU/l)
  • prolonged prothrombin (>4 secs increased)
  • hypoglycaemia

Treatment

  • of liver failure
  • raised intracranial pressure
    • ventilation to ↓ PCO2 to 3.5-4.0 kPa
    • mannitol

Prognosis

  • high mortality
