  • Greater omentum hangs down from stomach, covering transverse colon
    • formed by doubling over of dorsal mesentery
  • lesser omentum formed from ventral mesentry
    • attached to lesser curvature of stomach and undersurface of liver
    • free edge on right side
    • common bile duct, hepatic artery, and hepatic portal vein lie within free edge
  • behind the lesser omentum lies the lesser sac
    • continuous with peritoneal cavity
    • entered through epiploic foramen
      • limited by porta hepatis above
      • anteriorly by free margin of lesser omentum, with vessels
      • below by first part of duodenum and hepatic artery
      • behind by IVC
