  • lies beneath 9th, 10th and 11th ribs on left
  • attached to left kidney by lienorenal ligament (fold of peritoneum)
  • has contact with stomach, kidney, splenic flexure of colon, tail of pancreas
  • almost completely covered in peritoneum

Blood Supply

Parts

  • Consists of red and white pulp
  • White pulp
    • Mainly B lymphocytes
  • Red pulp
    •  Mainly Red cells

Functions

  • active in destruction of red blood cells
  • in other animals acts as a reservoir of red blood cells
