Trans-Urethral Resection of the Prostate


  • using a cytoscope the prostate is resected internally with a diathermy
  • usually performed under general anaesthetic

Precautions

  • use of glycine
    • normal saline will prevent diathermy working

Complications

  • Retrograde ejaculation (almost inevitable)

  • (rarely) impotence

  • minor haematuria

  • secondary haemorrhage

  • delay in recover of sphincter function (rarely permanent)

  • fluid balance disturbance
