Pelviureteric Junction Obstruction


  • may appear at any age from birth until end of 4th decade
  • may be physical narowing
  • may be defect of sphincter mechanism
  • causes pressure in collecting system and deterioration in renal function
  • predisposition to infection

Clinical Features

  • may be asymptomatic
  • aching pain in renal area
  • severe pain in abdomen or loins
    • +/- haematuria

Investigations

  • IVU
    • prolonged nephrogram
    • negative pyelogram
    • delayed drainage
    • spontaneous extravasation of contrast

Management

  • pyeloplasty
