  • Benign breast lesion

History

  • Occurs 15-35
  • may be more than one

Examination

  • Very mobile non-tender lump
  • Smooth, firm, rubbery, slips under examining finger

Pathology

Macroscopic

  • well circumscribed
  • lobulated
  • 10-40mm
  • surrounding breast tissue compressed
  • not tethered
  • younger
    • soft
    • slightly gelatinous cut surface
  • older
    • firmer
    • more fibrous
    • sometimes calcified

Microscopic

  • duct like structures
  • thinned ductular structure associated with overgrown connective tissue matrix

Variants

  • juvenile
    • large 50-100mm
    • commoner in Africans and West Indians

Treatment

  • Treated by excisional biopsy if any doubt about diagnosis
    • Young women (teens) may be reasonable to observe
