Lichen Simplex


  • cutaneous response to scratching

  • thickened, scaly, hyperpigmented areas of lichenification

  • starts with intense itching that becomes tender with scratching

  • rare before adolescence

  • commoner in females

  • common sites are nape of neck, lateral calves, upper thighs, upper back, scrotum, vulva

  • atopic individuals predisposed

  • contributory factor of emotional stress

  • diagnosis by exclusion

Treatment

  • very potent topical steroids +/- tar bandaging

  • phototherapy

  • cyclosporin
