  • incorporates derivatives of :
    1. septum tranversum
    2. pleuroperitoneal membranes
    3. paraxial mesoderm
    4. esophageal mesenchyme
  • myoblasts from septum tranversum migrate into pleuroperitoneal membrane taking phrenic nerves with them
  • septum transversum mainly forms central tendon of diaphragm
  • bulk of pleuroperitoneal muscle innervated by phrenic nerves
  • outer side rim of muscle develops from paraxial mesoderm from body wall hence has segmental innervation (T7 to T12)
  • forgut mesenchyme gives rise to muscle of and around crura
