Papillary Carcinoma of Thyroid

  • adenocarcinoma
  • usually present under 45 years
  • female 3:1 male
  • more common in patients exposed to radiation
  • non-encapsulated, infiltrative mass

Histology

  • epithelial papillary projections
  • cell nuclei large, clear areas - "orphan Annie"
  • calcified spherules may be present

Spread

  • via lymphatics

Examination

  • lump may be situated anterolaterally (lateral aberrant thyroid)
    • actually involved lymph node

Prognosis

  • excellent, grows slowly
  • 90% survival at 10 years
