Transfusion of Fresh Frozen Plasma

• contains coagulation factors II, VII, IX, X (Vit K dependent), V

• can be stored at -30^oC for up to 12 months

  • or 2 hours if thawed

• ABO compatibility checked but not cross-matched

Indications

• replace coagulation factors if no specific concentrate available

• warfarin

• acute Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation

• Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

• correct abnormal coagulation after massive transfusion or in liver disease

Dose

• 15ml/kg

Not to be used for

• hypocalcaemia

• plasma exchange

  • except in TTP

• formulaic replacement

• nutritional support

• immunodeficiency

• to stop bleeding due to low platelets

• to replace fibrinogen
