Anencephaly


  • neural tube defect

  • Failure of proper development of cranium and scalp

  • face and base of skull present

  • incompatible with life

Clinical features

  • usually diagnosed early and termination offered

  • polyhydramnios

    • inability to swallow

    • absence of foetal ADH

    • secretions of exposed choroid plexus and meninges

  • pregnancy may be prolonged

    • absence of foetal pituitary / oxytocic hormone

  • often face presentation

Prevention

  • folic acid pre-conception and in 1st trimester
