  • increase in vascular permeability
  • follows (e.g.)
    • infection
    • infarction
  • → raised intracranial pressure as brain enclosed in rigid skull
  • → occlusion of venous return
  • → increasing intracranial pressure
  • → herniation

Causes

  • vasogenic
  • cytotoxic (accumulation of cell water)
  • interstitial (consequence of hydrocdephalus)

Treatment

  • mannitol
