Central Retinal Vein Occlusion


  • Increasing incidence with age, commoner than arterial occlusion
  • Causes: chronic simple glaucoma, arteriosclerosis, ↑BP, polycythaemia
  • Sudden visual loss
  • Fundus like "stormy sunset"
  • Complications: macular oedema, neovasvcular glaucoma secondary to iris neovascularisation
  • Possible improvement 6 months to 1 year - peripheral vision improves most
  • 1/2 develop neovascular glaucoma

Treatment:

  • Panretinal laser photocoagulation can prevent neovascular glaucoma
