  • May be simple: holes in the retina allow fluid to separate retina from pigment epithelium
  • Painless loss of vision.
  • commoner in short-sighted people

History

  • visual field loss
    • Progresses upwards as retina detaches downwards,
    • downwards if retina detaches upwards
      • more likely to effect macula leading to permanent loss of visual acuity
  • flashing lights
  • floaters

Treatment

  • Needs urgent referral for retinal reattachment - e.g. laser surgery
