Autonomic Nervous system

Home ] Up ]

  • Innervates smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and many types of glands
  • Two major subdivisions often oppose each other
  • Require a chain of two neurons to affect a response
  • Cell body of first neuron lies in CNS and its axon terminate in an autonomic ganglion of the PNS
  • Cell bodies of seconnd neuron lie in autonomic ganglia and axons innervate peripheral effectors
  • Neurons in ganglia are multipolar
  • Transmission is often cholinergic (nicotinic but differs from NMJ)
  • Visceral sensory afferent often travel with the autonomic motr fibres. Therefore they are termed sympathetic afferetns and parasympathetic afferetns respectively.
