Mucous Membranes (aka mucosa)

  • consists of surface epithelium and basal lamina
    • with or without glands
  • lamina propria
    • supporting layer of connective tissue
  • muscularis mucosae
    • smooth muscle layer
    • occasionally present

Serous membranes (aka serosa)

  • line pleural, peritoneal and pericardial cavities
  • lining epithelium (mesothelium) does not contain glands
    • coated in watery secretion
  • basal lamina
  • lamina propria for support
