Thyroid Stimulating Hormone

  • released from anterior pituitary gland
  • thyrotrophin = thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
  • stimulates secretion of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) from thyroid gland
  • release stimulated by thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)
  • T3 and T4 inhibit release of TSH, so form negative feedback loop

Disorders

14.2.3.4 TSH = thyrotrophin (from thyrotroph cells)

actions on thyroid gland secretion and growth
control by feedback; via hypothalamic TRH (carbohydrate, cold, stress)
