Birth

  • if thought to be at increased risk may be offered

    • Hepatitis B (+ second dose at 6 weeks, third dose at 6 months)

    • BCG

2 months, 3 months, 4 months

  • Diptheria

  • Pertussis

  • Tetanus

  • Hib

  • Polio

  • Meningitis C

12-15 months

  • MMR

3 ½ years

  • diphtheria

  • tetanus

  • polio

  • MMR

10-14 years

  • BCG

Contradindications

  • live vaccines shouldn't be given to immunocompromised children

    • except MMR in HIV-positive

    • BCG in Africa to HIV-positive

  • shouldn't be given during acute febrile phase of illness

  • if vaccine has produced severe reaction previously

  • pertussis if evolving neurological problem

  • oral polio vaccine if diarrhoea - as may be ineffective

Complications

  • local irritation common

  • minor general reaction

    • fever and irritability for 48 hours

    • treated with paracetamol

  • major local reaction

    • rare

    • redness and swelling over > 2/3 of upper arm

  • major generalised reaction

    • high fever

    • inconsolable crying

  • Anaphylaxis
