Major Histocompatibility Complex

MHC class I

  • Display peptides derived from proteins in cytosol
  • Recognised by cytotoxic T-cells (CD8 +ve)
  • alpha chain and beta-2 microglobulin
  • 3 loci in humans - HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA,-C
  • Ubiquitous on nucleated cells

MHC class II

  • Display peptides derived from proteins in vesicles
  • Recognised by TH1 or TH2 cells
  • alpha and beta chain
  • 3 loci in humans - HLA-DR, -DP, -DQ
  • Found on B-cells, macrophages, antigen presenting cells (e.g. Langerhans cells), epithelial cells of thymus, microglia
