  • intracellular within polymorphonuclear leukocytes (neutrophils)

  • oxidase and catalase positive

  • strictly human

  • sexually transmitted

  • gonorrhoea

    • most common cause of PID

    • risk factors

      • Younger age

      • nonwhite race

      • low socioeconomic status

      • multiple /  new sexual partner

    • Male-to-female transmission more common than female-to-male

  • Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome

  • ophthalmia neonatorum

  • sepsis

  • migratory polyarthritis

  • endocarditis

  • anal infection

  • urethritis
