Laboratory Identification

• Gram positive cocci
• Catalase positive
• Coagulase negative (obviously) distinguishes from S. aureus
  • usually not further classified by laboratory

Diseases

• Endocarditis
• Catheter and shunt infections (20-65%)
• Prosthetic joint infections
• Urinary Tract Infections (S. saprophyticus)
  • young, sexually active women
