Superfical Peroneal Nerve
Deep Peroneal Nerve

  • Supplied from L4-S2
  • Branch of the Sciatic Nerve at lower third of thigh

Motor Supply

To dorsiflexors and eversion muscles of ankle and toes

  • superficial peroneal nerve
    • peroneus longus
    • peroneus brevis.
  • depp peroneal nerve
    • tibialis anterior
    • extensor digitorum longus
    • extensor hallucis longus
    • peroneus tertius
    • extensor digitorum brevis

Sensory Supply

  • lateral aspect of calf
  • dorsum of foot and toes except skin between great and second toe

Path

  1. arises in lower third of thigh
  2. passes through popliteal fossa close to medial aspect of biceps femoris
  3. crosses superficially to to lateral head of gastrocnemius
  4. passes around lateral aspect of neck of fibula (relatively superficial)
  5. passes deep to peroneus longus
  6. splits into superficial and deep peroneal nerves

superficial

  1. 2/3 down lateral aspect of leg nerve emerges through deep fascia and runs distally over front of leg and ankle

deep

  1. descends on interosseous membrane
  2. crosses ankle midway between the two malleoli

Common Pathology

  • commonly injured in fractures of fibula neck
    • foot drop
    • inability to dorsiflex or evert foot
    • sensory loss over lateral aspect of leg + dorsum of foot and toes
