Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Palsy

Right

  • arise from right vagus trunk as crosses first part of subclavian
  • hooks around subclavian artery
  • ascends between trachea and oesophagus
  • passes deep below lobe of thyroid
  • close relationship to inferior thyroid artery
  • passes beneath lower border of inferior constrictor muscle

 

Left

  • arises from left vagus trunk as nerve crosses arch of aorta
  • hooks around ligamentum venosum
  • ascends in groove between trachea and oesophagus (on left side)

 

Supplies

  • all muscles of larynx
    • except cricothyroid (supplied by external laryngeal branch of vagus)
  • mucous membrane 
    • of larynx below vocal folds
    • upper part of trachea
