  • collection of pus surrounded by "pyogenic membrane"
  • membrane consists of
    • sprouting capillaries
    • neutrophils
    • occasional fibroblasts
  • relatively inaccessible to antibodies and drugs
  • Usually "points" and bursts
    • may require surgical drainage
  • In hollow viscous fibrin may obstruct outflow and lead to empyema
  • May discharge along sinus tract
  • may be complicated by dystrophic calcification
