Oxytocin


  • causes contraction at fundus of pregnant uterus
  • gives slow contractions with full relaxation in between
  • effective when given parenterally (usually slow IV infusion)
  • onset of action 1-2 mins
  • usually given with amniotomy to induce or augment labour

Adverse Effects

  • Uterine spasm
  • Uterine hyperstimulation
  • Tetanic contractions
  • fluid retention
  • Water intoxication
  • Hyponatraemia

Pharmacokinetics

  • parenteral administration
  • Short plasma t1/2 (5-10mins) mainly because of tissue inactivation. A small amount is excreted via the kidneys
