  • transient disorder developing in response to exceptional physical / mental stress which usually subsides within hours or days

Stressors

overwhelming traumatic experience involving serious threat to security or physical integrity of individual / loved person

  • natural catastrophe
  • accident
  • battle
  • criminal assault
  • rape
  • multiple bereavement
  • domestic fire

Symptoms

usually disappear within 2-3 days of episode

  • initial 'daze'
  • constriction and narrowing of attention
    • inability to comprehend
    • disorientation
  • some withdrawal from situation
  • autonomic signs of panic an anxiety
