Adjustment Disorder


  • state of distress and emotional disturbance
  • usually interfering with social functioning and performance
  • arising in period of adaptation to a significant life change / stressful life event
  • stressor may be something like bereavement
  • response dependent on individuals social network / wider system of social supports

Symptoms

Onset within one month, doesn't usually last beyond 6 months

  • depressed mood
  • anxiety
  • worry
  • feeling of inability to cope
  • may be prone to episodes of violence / dramatic behaviour
  • may regress
    • thumb-sucking
    • bed-wetting
    • babyish speech

Types

  • depressive type
  • mixed anxiety and depressive type
  • conduct type
  • emotional type
  • mixed conduct and emotional type
