Dissociative (Conversion) disorders


(ICD-10 - hysteria)
(DSM-IV - dissociative = mental symptoms, conversion = physical symptoms)

  • Dissociative amnesia

ICD-10 criteria

  • no physical cause of symptoms can be found
  • association in time between onset of disorder and stressful events, problems, needs

Tradionally characterised by

  • Secondary gain
  • belle indifference

Epidemiology

  • Prevalence about 2%
  • Females > males
  • onset usually before 40 years

Treatment

  • Reassure no physical cause
  • explain probable psychogenic origin
  • help with maintaining stresses or problems
