Attention

  • Overlap with short term memory
  • may be based in prefrontal cortex

Spatial Attention

  • mapping of 3-D space
  • Right inferior parietal cortex, cingulate gyrus
  • damage leads to neglect

Temporal / Sustained

  • disordered in acute confusional states
  • easily distractable
  • need sensory input at night (e.g. lights left on)
  • caused by
    • meningitis, epileptic fits, head injury, etc.
  • difficulty laying down memory

Language

  • underlying structure same in different languages so probably genetically programmed (Chompsky)
  • Steven Pinker - "The Language Instinct"
  • Broca - expression
  • Wernicke - perception

Perception

  • superior temporal gyrus
  • preservation of fluent linguistic output
  • but as no feedback
    • long-winded
    • sometime gibberish
  • causes stroke, trauma, dementia
