Diagnosis

  • raised JVP

    • sharp diastolic collapse

    • y descent (Frierich's sign)

  • paradoxical pulse

  • increased neck vein distension during inspiration

  • reduced cardiac output

  • Muffled heart sounds
  • Engorged neck veins
  • Hypotension
  • Low voltage ECG

Treatment

  • Drain blood

Pericardiocentesis

  • Head towards scapula from xiphisternum
  • Patient must be attached to ECG
  • Ischaemic changes on ECG means you've gone too far
