  • blood into pleural space

Clinical Features

  • associated with other injuries
  • short of breath
  • cyanosis
  • reduced air entry
  • tracheal shift AWAY from haemothorax
  • distended neck veins
  • evidence of shock

Investigations

  • CXR

Treatment

  • Oxygen
  • insert two wide-bore cannulae
  • blood for cross-matching
  • commence IV fluids
  • axillary chest drain
  • referral to cardiothoracic surgeon
    • if >1l initially or >200ml/hr
