Patent Ductus Arteriosus
- second most common cardiovascular defect
- 10-15% of all congenital heart disease
Causes
- immature in pre-term infant and so doesn't close
- respiratory distres leads to hypoxia and acidosis preventing closure
- term baby has abnormality of smooth muscle and enothelium
Exmination
- continuous machinery murmur
- whole of left chest
- may be confined to area under left clavicle
Treatment
Risk of Infective Endocarditis so
must be closed
- pre-term baby
- term
- radiological coils / umbrella devices
