Chest and Lung Examination of Children


  • Inspect the chest

    • hyperinflation

    • pecus carinatum

    • pectus excavatum

    • Harrison's sulcus

  • Assess respiratory effort

    • respiratory rate

    • pattern of breathing

    • recession in intercostal spaces

    • nasal flaring

    • grunting on expiration

    • difficulties in walking, talking, drinking, speaking

  • Added noises

    • wheeze

    • stridor

    • cough

  • Percussion

  • Auscultation

    • may be easier to get child to breathe out and listen to inspiration

    • coarse crepitations may be transmitted from throat/upper airways
