Pickwickian syndrome

    • terminated by partial arousal
  • increased risk of road accidents / ?heart disease

History

  • witnessed apnoeas
  • snoring
  • daytime somnolence
  • morning headaches (if CO2 levels rise)
  • decreased libido
  • reduced cognitive performance

Investigations

diagnosis usually on 15 attacks / hour

  • nocturnal desaturations
  • sleep study
    • oxygen saturation
    • airflow at nose / mouth
    • ECG
    • EMG
    • Chest / abdominal wall movements

Treatment

  • CPAP
  • weight reduction may help
