    • posterior parts of intercostal spaces
    • posterior abdominal wall
    • pericardium
    • diaphragm
    • bronchi
    • oesophagus
  • variable origin
    • often formed from union of right ascending lumbar vein and right subcostal vein
  • ascends through aortic opening of diaphragm
  • on right side of aorta until fifth thoracic vertebra
  • arches forward over root of right lung to empty into posterior surface of superior vena cava
