Hepatitis E


  • single-stranded RNA calicivirus

  • excreted in faeces, spread by faecal-oral route

  • waterborne infection in India

Symptoms

  • incubation period is 6-8 months

  • generally mild

  • severe in pregnant women (up to 20% mortality)

    • DIC in third trimester

Hep E

 

  • Spread: enterally
  • No carrier state, no progress to chronic liver disease

 No treatment or vaccine. Self limiting. Avoidance (good sanitation, hygiene)
