No plicae circulares or villi present. Outer muscular layer divided into three equally spaced bands

  • mucosa
    • epithelium
      • numerous crypts of Lieberkühn
      • principal function in absorption of water and electrolytes
      • goblet cells increase nearer to rectum
      • all epithelial cells arise from precursors at base of crypts
      • cells shed after 6 days for absorptive and goblet cells (4 weeks for enteroendocrine cells)
  • submucosa
    • normal
  • muscularis externa
    • outer muscle layer divided into 3 longitudinal bands - teniae coli
    • formation of haustration in wall
    • peristalsis normally occurs once a day in order to empty distal colon
  • serosa
