- Hiatus hernia
- Prolonged vomiting
- Prolonged nasogastric intubation
- Operations which destroy cardiooesophageal area
- Acid-secreting mucosa within oesophagus (Barrett's oesophagus)

- dyspepsia/ flatulence
- smoking
- fat
- alcohol / caffeine
- pregnancy
Management
- antacids
- H2antagonists
- Proton pump inhibitors
- Endoscopy
- CLO test
- biopsy
- Barrett's oesophagus
- exclude malignancy
