Kernicterus

• due to severe jaundice in neonatal period

• bile pigment deposition in basal ganglia

• results in brain damage, choreoathetosis and spasticity

• mild cases can lead to deafness

Investigations

• bilirubin <250mmol/l

Treatment

• phototherapy

  • converts bilirubin to water soluble biliverdin

• exchange tranfusion
