• overt inflammation of glans penis and foreskin

• most common in children

• poor genital hygiene

• organisms

  • Candida

  • faecal bacteria

Symptoms

• Severe pain

• redness

• oedema

Treatment

• antibiotic cream or ointment
• NSAIDs
• oral antibiotics
• elective circumcision if chronic

Variants

Balanitis xerotic obliterans

• occurs later in life
• loss of skin elasticity and fibrosis of foreskin
• foreskin adherent to glans
• treat by circumcision
