- arises at level of lower border of popliteus
- passes forward into anterior compartment of leg
- through opening in upper part of interosseous membrane
- descends on anterior surface of interosseous membrane
- accompanied by deep peroneal nerve
- in upper part lies deep beneath muscle of anterior compartment of leg
- in lower part lies superficial in front of lower end of tibia
- passes behind superior extensor retinaculum
- medially
- tendon of extensor hallucis longus
- laterally
- deep peroneal nerve
- tendons of extensor digitorum longus
- in front of ankle joint become dorsalis pedis artery
