  • one of terminal branches of popliteal artery
  • begins at level of lower border of politeus
  • passes downward deep to 
    • gastrocnemius
    • soleus
    • deep fascia of leg
  • in upper partlies of posterior surface of tibialis posterior muscle 
  • in lower part lies on posterior surface of tibia
  • tibial nerve 
    1. initially medially
    2. then crosses posterior
    3. then lies lateral
  • in lower part of leg lies anterior to medial border of calcaneal tendon
    • covered only by skin and fascia
  • passes behind medial malleolus
    • deep to flexor retinaculum
    • terminates by dividing into medial and lateral plantar arteries
