Deaths should be referred to the coroner if:
- The cause of death is unknown
- The deceased was not seen by the certifying doctor either after death or
within 14 days before death
- The death may be due to an accident
- The death was unnatural, violent or suspicious
- The death may be due to self-neglect or neglect by others
- The death may be due to an abortion
- The death may be a suicide
- The death may be occupational/as a result of industrial disease
- The death occurred during/after detention in police custody or prison
- The death is during or within 24 hours of an
operation/anaesthetic/invasive procedure
