Ataxic Nystagmus

(Internuclear Ophthalmoplegia)

• caused by damage to Medial Longitudinal Bundle

Causes

• Multiple Sclerosis
• Vascular lesion to brainstem ipsilateral to adducting eye

Examination

• General
  • other signs of MS
    • young
    • ataxic speech
    • wheel chair
• Acuity
• Fields
• Pupils
• Movements
  • decreased adduction or lag in adducting eye
  • nystagmus (fast out) in abducting eye
  • may have Optic Atrophy
